The tale begins when Benjamin Barker, an innocent barber, is sent to an Australian penal colony because the evil Judge Turpin lusts after his wife Lucy and wants to get Barker out of the way. Sweeney Todd: 10 things you didn’t know about Tim Burton’s musical https://screenrant.com/sweeney-todd-tim-burton-johnny-depp-facts/ Now that spooky times are coming, take a look at this bloody and gothic piece of art, that is always a treat to watch due to the talented crew that made it possible. Hopefully, you will end up being mad and delighted about the flawless production that it is. Although Mrs. Lovett's character and role in the story are similar in each version, certain details vary according to the story's interpretation. In some versions, for example, Mrs. Lovett commits suicide when their crimes are discovered, while in others, Todd kills her himself or she is arrested and escapes execution by turning King's Evidence against Todd. I remember being so excited by this sequence when I first saw the film because “By the Sea” is one of my favorite songs from the musical. After the runaway success of her new and improved pie shop, Mrs. Lovett excitedly tells a distracted Sweeney about her plans for a future together. The garishly colorful scenes are a fun break from all the dark and gory depictions of London, and the bold costumes prove that all Tim Burton movies require that someone at some point be wearing a ridiculous amount of stripes.

Judy Kaye filled in for LuPone for a week (while LuPone was on vacation) in the 2005 Broadway revival, before it ended production in early 2006. She went on to the 2007 Canadian and American tour version of the John Doyle revival for which she received acclaim and had to learn to play the tuba. She also appeared in the 2000 concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London. A good costume is really about a great silhouette. So if you can create a great costume through that with colour and shape, people will get the picture” -Colleen AtwoodRegardless of the stylistic choices, the costumes in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street were constructed beautifully. One costume that seems to be constructed accurately is the aforementioned blue dress Johanna wears. The dress rests almost off her shoulders, and on the top hem there is a line of white lace, which was popular during the Crinoline time period. In the torso of this beautiful blue dress, one can clearly see the structural work done with seams and stitching. Also in the torso, one can tell that there is just the hint of a corset underneath. The fabric this dress is made of looks lush and expensive, which would be accurate considering that her adoptive care-giver is a well-known judge. Also, if one looks closely, you can see a small print on the fabric, especially on the bodice. The print would be accurate to the Crinoline time period thanks to the advances from the industrial revolution. Knapp, R. (2011). The American Musical and the Performance of Personal Identity. Princeton University Press. Imelda Staunton played Mrs. Lovett in the 2011 production at the Chichester Festival Theatre which transferred to the West End in 2012 at the Adelphi Theatre.

While in most versions of the Sweeney Todd story Mrs. Lovett's past history is not stated, usually she is depicted as a childless widow, although in some rare depictions, Mr. Albert Lovett is shown. In Christopher Bond's 1973 play Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Stephen Sondheim's 1979 musical adaptation, before she goes into business with Todd she is living in poverty in a filthy, vermin-infested flat, and laments that her pies are the worst in London. While she feels no remorse about using the bodies of Todd's victims in her pies, she is sometimes shown to have a softer side to those in need. In the Bond play and Sondheim musical, she takes in the young orphan Tobias Ragg and considers taking in Todd's daughter Johanna, as well. In the original "penny dreadful" serial and George Dibdin Pitt's 1847 stage play, The String of Pearls; or, The Fiend of Fleet Street, however, this soft side does not extend to her "assistants", whom she imprisons in the bakehouse and often works to death. Felicity Palmer performed as Lovett in the 2003 production at the Royal Opera House, its only musical produced. Mrs Lovett Costume – Sweeney Todd

Crinoline, the period of costume history from 1840-1865, is the time period in which Sweeney Todd is set. One defining feature from this time period is missing from a majority of the movie, the Crinoline. Crinoline’s were the main shift from the time period before, and these under garments held the dresses out to huge, even extreme, sizes. The leading players in the movie do not particularly follow all of the traditional Crinoline styles, but the ensemble members come very close. For example, in the song, “Pirelli's Miracle Elixir” there are many times that the camera would sweep over the ensemble and they were all dressed according to period. The women had their hair in the traditional twist and bonnets, but the leading females never wore their hair as such nor did they wear bonnets. This movie, while succeeding with the ensembles costumes, does not truly replicate the time period. What one must remember about the movie is that it is stylized and the costumes contain elements from the time period without fully fulfilling the requirement that comes with a realistic period piece. However, Sweeney’s quest for vengeance against the judge turns into a vendetta against all humanity. What happened then, well that’s the play, and he wouldn’t want me to give it away. So if you haven’t yet, watch Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street! He (Tim Burton) is a director that appreciates the texture and nuances of costume. Pair a super-glam ruched swimsuit with a pair of scalloped high-waisted shorts for a retro look (plus, since it’s a one-piece, you could totally pass it off as a top). Then slip on a pair of red sandals for a pop of color. A dramatic straw hat, circular sunglasses, and an ornate beach towel resemble Mrs. Lovett’s fantasy outfits. Get ready to turn heads while you’re down by the beautiful sea! What did you think? Elaine Paige portrayed the role in the 2004 opera at the New York City Opera, for which she was nominated for the Drama Desk for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Sondheim, S. (1990). Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (vocal score). Rilting Music, Inc. Many Victorian films always portray the rich society of England, due to the Industrial Revolution. However, it is amazing to realize how through the use of textures, accessories, silhouettes, and colour it is possible to create a still Victorian but gothic and mad world. Colleen Atwood, a multiple costume design award winner, has always surprised us with her talent. This movie, being a classic tale, is not the exception of her expertise and passion.

The story of this vengeful barber and his pie-baking partner has been around in varied incarnations since 1846, when the bloody tale of Sweeney Todd became a standard subject for Victorian melodramas. Carolee Carmello played Mrs. Lovett in the 2017 Off-Broadway production at the Barrow Street Theatre from April 11, 2017 until February 25, 2018. Sweeney Todd, former Benjamin Barker, is a barber who is unjustly convicted by Judge Turpin, a man who wanted to take his family from him. Todd is exiled to Australia and after many years, he is able to return to London, seeking revenge against Turpin. He starts working as a barber again, but hate has invaded his entire soul and killing becomes an obsession. While it’s not quite beach weather right now, it’s never too early to start planning for summer. (Or perhaps you’re planning a seaside jaunt before then!) Although you’re probably not keen on wearing authentic Victorian swimming bloomers, a vintage-inspired beach outfit is fun and classy. Plus it’ll make you stand out in a sea of itsy-bitsy bikinis! Her physical appearance varies from a slim and alluring beauty, to a plump, homely lunatic.
